Yes, as a child I realized pretty early that my parents are pained, whenever I stutter. So, I became adept at hiding it from them, and later on even from my own conscious mind..(denial, suppression).. In India, higher education is accessible only if you can communicate orally well.. Much later, when I started Speech support group and began talking of 'my stammer' and my struggles - my mother would often react: What are you talking? You dont stutter! My wife, also used to be my teacher, long time back. Also, at home, the facade of fluency would ofetn slip- so, when I began talking of 'my stammer', she was not surprised; rather, she was very supportive. Now, she understands and supports my work, with CWS and PWS.. In childhood, my parents, could not afford costly consultations- also, in sixties, there were no trained SLPs in most cities in India.. Even now, things have not changed much- Hence, I am trying to promote self help movement.. Feel free to get back with more questions!
