Many years ago, when I was working on gender issues, I discovered that as long as "poor" asian women are given charity in the name of gender justice, no significant change comes into their status in society or in their personal lives- but once you help them on the path of "empowerment"- that they can change their reality, instead of being a victim of it- many women undergo radical change and also change their surroundings. I discovered a parallel in covert stuttering- Once I adopted the role of teaching others, what stuttering is and what they are supposed to do.. Locus of thinking, feeling and acting changed (for better).. I did have an advantage- even though I was not a SLP, I was a trained medical professional.. I wonder, how can we help other PWS who may not have such "head start" or social "status" to explore similar path.. You as an SLP can answer that, I guess!
