Dear Elizabeth I honestly think that stuttering is a neurobiological disorder in the language area of the brain that, for some people, has psychosocial consequences. What people think about stuttering does not necessarily represent what the neurosciences have been teaching us for the past 15 years or so. And I do believe that cultural principles may interfere in the way people feel about stuttering. I have a tendency to agree that similar results could be found in western speakers. Dr Howell mentioned a book just released that in Japan and other Asian places stuttering is different. I have not read the book yet. Please see the reference in his comment above. It may help answer your question. Which is a good question, but the way, because it shows us the huge amount of research is still needed in order to improve our knowledge about stuttering. All the best Anelise
