One factor often suggested is distraction. As in some other cases, it is suggested that the speaker's attention is distracted by the other voice, and his mind is taken off the stutter. Distraction effect has been criticized as less an explanation than a place-holder for things that aren't understood. Another possibility suggested is that the other speaker provides a rhythm that should come naturally in speech, but is lacking in the stutterer. That's not particularly satisfying either.
