We have been doing some parent support groups. they work really well. The problem is educating the masses. The parents who come to support groups do well. Even the parents who bring their kids to support groups do well. It is all of the rest that we need to reach. It is a problem of educating almost everyone. Most people still believe that it is the school's responsibility to fix their kids, to teach their kids and do everything else. Just look at some of the issues that go on in school today.....for example, "How will sex education be taught?". In my opinion, it is good to have the teachers teach anatomy, etc., but the basic teaching should be done by parents. If this is the case with sex education, what do you think will happen with stuttering? (Okay, now I can get down from my soapbox). the schools shold help support the parents in all ways possible, but parents do need to take a role in this as well. I think one of our primary roles is to educate and let parents know that we can help, but we can't do it all. In the mean time, we have to keep doing our job, providing support, meeting with teens who stutter, provide parents groups, etc. I can't tell you how many times I have sat in a room, either by myself, or with one teen, waiting for everyone else to show up. Sometimes they don't show up! But when they do, we need to be their and be ready for them. It takes persistence. Thanks again. John T.
