Bernie, thank you for your thoughtful and as usual insightful comments on the SE and some people we know who have been using the SE for several months. First. the SE does work the same for everyone. Even though it may reduce the overall amount of stuttering it does not erase all the fears, avoidances and negative habits developed to cope with stuttering. Some PWS are very good at applying the SE controls to their stuttering and because of that experience develope more confidence in difficult speaking situations. Others do not. While the SE does facilitate a relatively passive response ( you don't need to figure out how to use the echo) it does not overcome the severe frustration anxiety some persons have developed. Additionally if the environment is too noisy or too distracting some people are unable to still focus on the SE echo..They get better at this. They still have to practice with the SE and apply good fluency initiating as well as stuttering modification techniques. It's a guide not cure.....
